Summary -

Jung often compared the spiral process of individuation to the growth of a tree. Just as the tree embodies its life-story in its very structure and anatomy, we too grow around obstacles, lean towards the sun, and draw nourishment from our ‘muddy routes’.

Beneath the sudden fits and starts of our developmental spurts, the great ground plan of our destiny unfolds slowly but surely. Individuation is the natural flowering of every life organism, but for homo sapiens it becomes a more complicated affair due to our divided nature and the complex adaptations required by societal and cultural norms.

Our real self can go to ground and instead our false self acts to camouflage us in the colours of consensus reality. This split activates the archetype of the Self, the central ordering principal which, like a magnet, draws to itself what belongs and rejects what does not.

We begin to have confidence in our uniqueness and to value our life-history.

‘The path to wholeness is made up of fateful detours and wrong turnings’, said Jung. We begin to see purpose and meaning even in our mistakes and disappointments. In fact it is these stings that pierce our heart, implicating us in life and demanding fresh adaptations and creative solutions.

It is this engagement with every aspect of our life and times that paradoxically shifts the centre of personality from the ego to the Self. This does not mean that we should seek to eliminate the ego, quite the opposite. Only a strong, healthy ego can act in service of the Self, an ego which does not respond with fear, phobias, and defenses to the challenges of fate, but is able to draw upon the strength and fearlessness of the Self and its integral place in the Cosmos.

‘O chestnut tree, great rooted blossomer,

Are you the leaf, the blossom or the bole?

O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,

How can we know the dancer from the dance?’

from Among School Children by W.B. Yeats
