Summary

I have seen an Ancient Path, an ancient road traversed by the rightly enlightened Ones of former times.’

- Buddha

The Major Arcana illuminate an organised sequence of steps to help us to identify and access the different stages on our journey towards Wisdom. The 22 images of the Major Arcana reveal an inner path laid down countless millennia ago by the Ancestors. It is a path upon which all humans have walked and continue to walk as we evolve and grow in consciousness.

Traditionally, this path was undertaken consciously by the initiate as part of a dedicated spiritual practice. Now, due to circumstances beyond our control, we are all called to embark consciously on this inner work. Mother Nature has compelled us both individually and collectively to turn aside from our normal preoccupations to understand how to draw on the resources of our deepest self to become what we were meant to become from the beginning.

This journey takes us into the Underworld and out again to confront the Powers of the Collective Unconscious as the ceaseless flow of Nature that propels us out of our comfortable lives to undertake the task before us.

Resistance is futile so we might as well act with good grace and begin.

In this series of 8 lectures we will concentrate on the arcana of Justice VIII, The Hermit IX, The Wheel of Fortune X, Strength XI, The Hanged Man XII, Death XIII and Temperance XIV as the symbols most useful to us now. We will take in aspects of the Western Magical Tradition, Mythology, Alchemy, Jungian Psychology, Indigenous Shamanic Traditions, Vedantic Philosophy and the Bhavachakra of Buddhism to explore the next steps of our human journey.

As any change must begin somewhere, it is the single individual who will experience it and carry it through. The change must indeed begin with an individual; it might be any one of us. Nobody can afford to look round and to wait for somebody else to do what he is loath to do himself.

- C.G. Jung
